On May 13 we focused on the elder son, who though he stayed home as a son, had taken on an identity of slavery in relationship to his loving Father. Those of us who have grown up in the church easily fall into this trap as duty and envy replace joy and love.

Our final reflection will take place on May 20 as we take a closer look at the Father’s hands in the painting, as well as our own call to imitate our Father in Heaven, like Father like son.  We hope you can join us! If you’d like to read the Scripture, it can be found in Luke 15:11-32.

In case of rain the event will be held at the church which is just up the hill from the park. All pets should be on a leash or in a carrier to ensure the safety of all. We hope you and your pets will join us!

There are lots of ways to be involved, from donating plants from your garden to preparing strawberries or directing people where to park or overseeing a table.

There will also be a planning meeting after worship on June 3. All are welcome to attend.

This year we made a record donation of 2 heifers, 2 goats and 2 sheep, which are going to a community in need in Arkansas. Praise God for the amazing heart for mission at Merrimacport United Methodist Church where we’re making a difference in lives in our community, around the country and throughout the world!

In addition to candlelighting, the children made mother’s day crafts for all the ladies of the church and distributed after worship. They made beautiful flower pens, a useful as well as pretty gift. Thanks kids!

This is a joyful day for many but can also be a very painful day for some who are grieving the loss of mothers and children or those whose relationships with their mothers have been neglectful or even abusive. We lifted up all in prayer and provided the space both for celebration as well as sadness.

We especially give thanks for our “spiritual mothers,” those women in our lives who have helped us grow in our faith in Christ and who have inspired us by their faithfulness.

Did you know that mother’s day was begun within the Methodist (then called the Methodist Episcopal) Church? You can read about it in Wikipedia. The Merrimacport United Methodist Church will likewise be celebrating Mother’s Day this Sunday, which will include an opportunity to light a candle in memory or honor of a special woman in your life as well as a special children’s craft led by dads.
