On May 6 we focused on the younger son, and our own tendancy to leave the home of our loving Father God searching for love in all the wrong places.

On May 13 we focused on the elder son, who though he stayed home as a son, had taken on an identity of slavery in relationship to his loving Father. Those of us who have grown up in the church easily fall into this trap as duty and envy replace joy and love.

Our final reflection will take place on May 20 as we take a closer look at the Father’s hands in the painting, as well as our own call to imitate our Father in Heaven, like Father like son. We hope you can join us! If you’d like to read the Scripture, it can be found in Luke 15:11-32.

After Easter Sunday we count the year’s funds and make a donation to Heifer International with 100% of donations going to those in need within our own nation.

This year we made a record donation of 2 heifers, 2 goats and 2 sheep, which are going to a community in need in Arkansas. Praise God for the amazing heart for mission at Merrimacport United Methodist Church where we’re making a difference in lives in our community, around the country and throughout the world!

In addition to candlelighting, the children made mother’s day crafts for all the ladies of the church and distributed after worship. They made beautiful flower pens, a useful as well as pretty gift. Thanks kids!

This is a joyful day for many but can also be a very painful day for some who are grieving the loss of mothers and children or those whose relationships with their mothers have been neglectful or even abusive. We lifted up all in prayer and provided the space both for celebration as well as sadness.

We especially give thanks for our “spiritual mothers,” those women in our lives who have helped us grow in our faith in Christ and who have inspired us by their faithfulness.

While going without food themselves for 30 hours, they served at the Merrimac Senior Food Pantry, made pillows for Emmaus House, baked cookies for kids at Emmaus House, made CSB (Corn Soy Blend) for those who wanted to experience third world food donations rather than fasting completely, played tribe games to learn about world hunger, and slept outside in cardboard boxes. They broke their fast with Holy Communion during worship Sunday and then had a fabulous spaghetti lunch. They have raised $2,474 to fight world hunger – that feeds over 80 kids for a month. Praise God! To view more photos go to the 30 Hour Famine Photo Album.
