Join us for Worship on Thursday April 17

Maundy Thursday Service 7:00 p.m. on April 17 at the Merrimacport  United Methodist Church.

This Maundy Thursday we will experience a Tenebrae Service including meditative hymns, Holy Communion, readings and extinguishing candles while the Sanctuary is stripped of its symbols and linens.

“Tenebrae” is the Latin word for darkness or shadows, in anticipation of the crucifixion of Jesus. Often this service is held on Maundy Thursday. “Maundy” may come from the Latin word for “commandment” when Jesus washed his disciples feet during the Last Supper and told them by so doing he was giving them a “new commandment” to love one another. “Maundy” may also be derived from the Maundy purses of alms which the King of England used to distribute to the poor before attending Mass that day. Regardless of the historical roots, we hope this is a meaningful time of worship for all as we meditate upon the last hours before the loving sacrifice Jesus would make for us.

The church is located at 39 High Street (Corner of High St andRiver Rd), Merrimac, MA
