On Sunday January 19, the Methodist and Catholic churches in Merrimac, Mass were making a bit of history together. Father George Morin of Holy Redeemer Parish was invited to preach and lead worship together at the Merrimacport UMC. Sunday marked the beginning of the week Christians are called to pray for unity; through our common faith we began to live out that prayer together. In spite of snowy weather, holiday weekend and Pats game, we had a great showing from both churches. Music was led by musicians from Merrimacport and Holy Redeemer, including the Merrimac Praise Band which plays at both churches each month. Readings and prayers were also offered by members of each congregation.
Father George preached on the meaning of baptism, which is a sacrament our churches hold very much in common. Using props in his sermon helped everyone gain a deeper appreciation for their baptism. Both clergy then led a service of baptismal remembrance. All were invited to come forward to place a hand in the baptismal font to remember their baptism, with a blessing from both clergy.
We closed worship singing together, holding hands around the sanctuary – a wonderful picture of our unity. Most stayed for fellowship and food afterwards to continue this special time together.
Many thanks to all who assisted, participated and attended this wonderful time of worship. We are already talking about our next event which will be held at Holy Redeemer.
