Churches are making history in Merrimac! Father George Morin of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Parish in Merrimac has accepted an invitation to preach at the Merrimacport United Methodist Church on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. The two churches will host worship together with musical offerings from each congregation. This is the first event of this nature in the history of Merrimac.
This service will be performed on Ecumenical Sunday and the International Week of Prayer for Christian unity January 18-25. Cardinal Sean O’Malley accepted a similar invitation to preach in the Sudbury United Methodist Church last Sunday in an effort to promote unity between Protestants and Catholics, and in honor of the 50th anniversary of the historic visit of Cardinal Richard Cushing to the Sudbury church following the Second Vatican Council.
The churches of Merrimac recently hosted their first Blue Christmas Ecumenical service together, and they are hoping that this is the beginning of a vital relationship between all Christians in Merrimac. “We have much more in common than in disagreement; together we affirm the Christian faith, creeds, baptism, Scripture, and most importantly our common call to serve our community and world together in Christ’s love,” Rev. Arrison explained.
The churches hope to continue growing in their relationship together, not only in worship but through Bible study and mission.
All are welcome to attend the Merrimac Ecumenical Worship Service, and refreshments will be provided after worship.
The Merrimacport United Methodist Church is located at 39 High Street (corner of River Road) in Merrimac, MA. There is abundant street parking along River Road and High Street. FMI 978.346.8989 or www.MerrimacportUMC.org
